Dr. Jerry M. Foster is a Tennessee Board Certified Doctor of Internal Medicine and Oncology. When Dr. Foster is not practicing medicine he embarks on his second passion – the study of the War Between the States. Collecting “all things Civil War”, Dr. Jerry M. Foster will join many others this year in remembering the 150th year anniversary of the beginning of the Civil War.
“This anniversary of the Civil War will be remembered and commemorated by living history buffs, scholars and many more Civil War enthusiasts,” says Dr. Jerry M. Foster. Through this anniversary, Dr. Foster says he will be reminded of his studies of both great armies. “Both sides believed they were just in their cause and both sides carried great armies and commanders alike,” explains Dr. Jerry M. Foster. And yet to this day a disagreement about the nature of the war remains. “Some argue that the war was about slavery and others argue that the war was about state’s rights,” notes Dr. Foster. In his opinion, Dr. Jerry M. Foster does not think that argument will ever be solved, completely.
On July 21st of 1861, recounts Dr. Jerry M. Foster, the Civil War – often referred to as The War Between the States – began. “The war would end just short of four years later at Appomattox Court House on April 9, 1865,” adds Dr. Foster. It was there, states Dr. Jerry M. Foster, where General Lee of the South would surrender. And according to Dr. Foster, the lessons learned in that dark time are still crucial today.
Dr. Jerry M. Foster describes the war as a “critical point” in American history. “This war may have begun at Manassas and ended at Appomattox Court House but what came of it, we still remember today,” he believes. According to Dr. Jerry M. Foster, our nation emerged from that “critical and devastating” point stronger. “We rebounded from a conflict in which brother fought brother to one united nation,” says Dr. Jerry M. Foster. And America learned that a nation divided against itself cannot stand.
Dr. Jerry M. Foster is a 1971 graduate of North Carolina State University. Completing his doctoral program through Duke University and Vanderbilt University, Dr. Jerry M. Foster attended the London University School of Medicine. Dr. Jerry M. Foster lives and works in Franklin, Tennessee where he resides with his wife and children.
